About

I consider the arts as my brain food; it influences much of who I am, what I think, and what I write. I want an audience to get a taste of what I think is delicious and let them decide if it suits their appetite.

Brainchilada is a blog featuring the things that I like to gobble down — books, music, movies, and sometimes actual food. I won’t enumerate the genres, artists, and authors here lest it will spoil the fun. It will be served to my readers bit by bit.

History

Back in our honeymoon year in 2010, my boyfriend and I discovered a shared passion for music, travel, movies, and food.

We had all the resources back then — time, money, and motivation. We were adventurous and eager to travel to new destinations together and try different things, and we documented our trips by taking amateur photos of the scenic places and palatable food we ate. The photos eventually piled up throughout the months, so we came up with the idea of starting a blog. We had it all planned — he was going to tell me what he thinks of the food or the place, and I was going to translate his thoughts into writing. The project didn’t push through; laziness and other preoccupations got the better of us. Nonetheless, we still ate, and we continued planning for trips (even though few materialized).

If this blog had been launched more than a year ago, it would probably be only about food and travel. But after I learned that I was pregnant this April, the traveling and the hunting for good restaurants ceased, not because we no longer want to, but because our budget can no longer afford them. That’s why I had to scratch the idea of incorporating travel in my blog. My boyfriend and I settled for the less expensive but also less exhilarating walks in the malls. We both love watching movies at the cinema or at home — at least that’s one activity we can still afford. We also love visiting bookstores (often for the sheer pleasure of looking at new or unfamiliar titles and flipping through pages we haven’t read than for actually purchasing a book). Actually, I’m more into literature than him. During lazy afternoons at his room, we would read — me with a Murakami novel, him with a thick volume on Java programming. But I digress. Incidentally, we found that we almost have the same taste in music. One hobby of ours is discussing the history of bands and how their music progressed throughout the years. I’m often amazed at how he knows the most obscure of songs, which I have in my iPod years before I met him. This blog will reveal those movies, books, and music that we love as narrated by me.

The idea of starting that long overdue blog was revived one afternoon when, in the days leading to the imminent delivery of my baby, I had nothing better to do with my time. I told my boyfriend that I’m going to create the blog, and it’s going to be about books, music, movies, and food. He suggested that I stick to one topic first. So I’m going to post mostly about books first, as I have been a collecting and reading books since the age of 10, then I will branch out to different topics.
